Eschatology : Prophetic Accuracy in the Life of our Lord.

  1. Prophecies fulfilled by our Lord during His Earthly Ministry.

In the Old Testament there are some basic prophecies concerning the ministry of our Lord. While on earth the Lord fulfilled every single prediction.
  1. He would be born of a virgin. Compare
Isa 7:14  So the Lord himself will give you this sign: A virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and she will name him Immanuel [God Is With Us]. GW
Mat 1:20  Joseph had this in mind when an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said to him, "Joseph, descendant of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She is pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
Mat 1:21  She will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus [He Saves], because he will save his people from their sins."
Mat 1:22  All this happened so that what the Lord had spoken through the prophet came true:
Mat 1:23  "The virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel," which means "God is with us."

  1. He would be given the Throne of His father David.
2Sa 7:12  "'When the time comes for you to lie down in death with your ancestors, I will send one of your descendants, one who will come from you. I will establish his kingdom.
2Sa 7:13  He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
Luk 1:31  You will become pregnant, give birth to a son, and name him Jesus.
Luk 1:32  He will be a great man and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David.
Luk 1:33  Your son will be king of Jacob's people forever, and his kingdom will never end."

  1. He would be called Emmanuel.
Isa 7:14  So the Lord himself will give you this sign: A virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and she will name him Immanuel [God Is With Us]. GW
Mat 1:23  "The virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel," which means "God is with us."

  1. He would be rejected by His own.
Isa 53:3  He was despised and rejected by people. He was a man of sorrows, familiar with suffering. He was despised like one from whom people turn their faces, and we didn't consider him to be worth anything. GW
Joh 1:11  He went to his own people, and his own people didn't accept him.
Joh 7:5  Even his brothers didn't believe in him.
Jesus rejected at Nazareth

  1. He would have a forerunner.
Isa 40:3  A voice cries out in the desert: "Clear a way for the LORD. Make a straight highway in the wilderness for our God.
Isa 40:4  Every valley will be raised. Every mountain and hill will be lowered. Steep places will be made level. Rough places will be made smooth.
Isa 40:5  Then the LORD'S glory will be revealed and all people will see it together. The LORD has spoken."
Mal 3:1  "I'm going to send my messenger, and he will clear the way ahead of me. Then the Lord you are looking for will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the promise will come. He is the one you want," says the LORD of Armies.

Mat 3:1  Later, John the Baptizer appeared in the desert of Judea. His message was,
Mat 3:2  "Turn to God and change the way you think and act, because the kingdom of heaven is near."
Mat 3:3  Isaiah the prophet spoke about this man when he said, "A voice cries out in the desert: 'Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!'"

Luk 1:76  "You, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his way.
Luk 1:77  You will make his people know that they can be saved through the forgiveness of their sins.
Luk 1:78  A new day will dawn on us from above because our God is loving and merciful.

Luk 3:3  John traveled throughout the region around the Jordan River. He told people about a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Luk 3:4  As the prophet Isaiah wrote in his book, "A voice cries out in the desert: 'Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!
Luk 3:5  Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be leveled. The crooked ways will be made straight. The rough roads will be made smooth.
Luk 3:6  All people will see the salvation that God gives.'"

  1. He would be born in Bethlehem.
Micah 5:2 And you, Bethlehem Ephratah, you being least among the thousands of Judah, out of you He shall come forth to Me, to become Ruler in Israel, He whose goings forth have been from of old, from the days of eternity.
Mat 2:5  And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judea. For so it is written by the prophet,
Mat 2:6  "And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the governors of Judah. For out of you shall come a Governor who shall rule My people Israel."

  1. He would be visited by the Wise Men and showered with gifts.
Isa 60:2  For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the peoples; but Jehovah shall rise on you, and His glory shall be seen on you.
Isa 60:3  And the nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawning.

Mat 2:11  And coming into the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother. And they fell down and worshiped Him. And opening their treasures, they presented gifts to Him, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

  1. He would be in Egypt for a season.
Hos 11:1  When Israel was a child, then I loved him and called My son out of Egypt.
Mat 2:14  And he arose and took the young child and his mother by night and departed into Egypt.
Mat 2:15  And he was there until the death of Herod; so that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the LORD through the prophet, "Out of Egypt I have called My Son."

  1. His birthplace would suffer a massacre of Infants.
Jer 31:15  So says Jehovah: A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her sons; she refuses to be comforted for her sons, because they are not.
Jer 31:16  So says Jehovah: Hold back your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears; for your work shall be rewarded, says Jehovah. And they shall come again from the land of the enemy.

Mat 2:16  Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was greatly enraged. And he sent and killed all the boys in Bethlehem, and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had carefully inquired of the wise men.
Mat 2:17  Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
Mat 2:18  "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not."
  1. He would be called a Nazarene
Isa 11:1  And a Shoot goes out from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
Out of the stumps of Jesse, i.e., out of the remnant of the chosen royal family which has sunk down to the insignificance of the house from which it sprang, there comes forth a twig (choter), which promises to supply the place of the trunk and crown; and down below, in the roots covered with earth, and only rising a little above it, there shows itself a nētzer, i.e., a fresh green shoot (from nâtzēr, to shine or blossom). In the historical account of the fulfilment, even the ring of the words of the prophecy is noticed: the nētzer, at first so humble and insignificant, was a poor despised Nazarene (Mat_2:23). But the expression yiphreh shows at once that it will not stop at this lowliness of origin. The shoot will bring forth fruit (pârâh, different in meaning, and possibly  [K&D Commentary]

Mat 2:23  And he came and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, "He shall be called a Nazarene."
A Nazarene
A term of contempt (compare Joh_1:46, and Joh_7:52). The very name of Nazareth suggested insignificance. In Hebrew it meant sprout or shoot. The name is prophetically given to the Messiah (Isa_11:1).

Marked with an “N” for “Nazarene”

Some are saying a “Christian holocaust” may be on the verge of breaking out in Iraq.  Reportedly, the Islamic State/ISIS is painting an “N”–for “Nazarene”–on the homes of the Christians remaining in Mosul to mark them for whatever is going to come next.  Douglas Farrow is going to paint an “N” over his door in a show of solidarity.

  1. He would be zealous for His Father.
Psa 69:9  For the zeal of Your house has eaten Me up; and the reproaches of those who reproached You have fallen on Me.
Joh 2:13  And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Joh 2:14  And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers sitting.

Joh 2:15  And when He had made a scourge of small cords, He drove them all out of the temple, also the sheep and the oxen. And He poured out the money-changers' money and overthrew the tables.
Joh 2:16  And He said to those who sold doves, Take these things away from here. Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise.
Joh 2:17  And His disciples remembered that it was written, "The zeal of Your house has eaten Me up."

“Zeal” is intense ardor in reference to any object. The “zeal of thine house” means extraordinary concern for the temple of God; intense solicitude that the worship there should be pure, and such as God would approve.
Hath eaten me up - Hath absorbed me, or engaged my entire attention and affection; hath surpassed all other feelings

  1. He would be filled with God’s Spirit.
Isa 61:1  The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is on Me; because Jehovah has anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
Isa 61:2  to preach the acceptable year of Jehovah and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
Isa 61:3  to appoint to those who mourn in Zion, to give to them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the mantle of praise for the spirit of heaviness; so that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that He might be glorified.

Luk 4:18  "The Spirit of the Lord is on Me; because of this He has anointed Me to proclaim the Gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and new sight to the blind, to set at liberty those having been crushed,
Luk 4:19  to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."
Luk 4:20  And rolling up the book, returning it to the attendant, He sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on Him.
Luk 4:21  And He began to say to them, Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your ears.

Luk 4:22  And all bore witness to Him and wondered at the gracious words which came out of His mouth. And they said, Is this not Joseph's son?
