Eschatology : The Vision of the Four Beasts Daniel 7.

Notes from Lecture by Pastor Maurice Nicholson
beasts-daniel.jpg

Daniel 7:2 Daniel declared, "I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea.
The Four winds were stirring up the sea in turmoil.
Compare Rev 13:1  And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads.
The Sea speaks of the People of the earth are in Turmoil.

Dan 7:3  And four great beasts came up from the sea, different from one another.
These four beasts came up in a sequence or in order.

Dan 7:4  The first was like a lion and had eagle's wings. I watched until its wings were plucked,[or torn off NIV], and it was lifted up from the earth and made to stand on its feet like a man. And a man's heart was given to it.
This speaks of Nebuchadnezzar being humbled.

        Daniel before Nebuchadnezzar
Belshazzar, who followed Nebuchadnezzar, means deceitful. Remember the Handwriting by God on the Wall of the Palace as he praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone while he drank from the utensils of the true and Living God from the temple in Jerusalem There he drank with his nobles, his wives and his concubines until the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote  Daniel 5:25-28

BelShazzar and the Hand writing on the wall

MENE, MENE TEKEL, UPHARSIN”
“Mene” God has numbered the days of your reign, and brought it to an end.
“Tekel” : You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
“Upharsin” : Your kingdom is divided and  given to the Medes and Persian

That very night he was slain, and darius the Mede took over the Kingdom, at the age of 62 years. Dan 5:30
This was the Demise of the babylonian Empire and the Inauguration of the Medo Persian Empire.

Dan 7:5  And behold another beast, a second, like a bear. And it raised itself up on one side, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. And they said this to it: Arise, eat up much flesh.
a Bear : Jerome (on Hos_13:8) remarks, “It is said by those who have studied the nature of wild beasts, that none among them is more ferocious than the bear when deprived of its young, or when hungry.”
Raise itself up on one side.  Imbalance between the Medes and the Persians
(b) Its rising up on one of its sides: “and it raised up itself on one side.” The Chaldee word used here (שׁטר  sheṭar) occurs nowhere else. It means side (Gesenius), and would be applied here to the side of an animal, as if he lifted up one side before the other when he rose. The Latin Vulgate renders it, in parte stetit. The Greek (Walton), έις μέρος ἕν ἐστάθη  eis  meros hen estathē - “it stood on one part;” or, as Thompson renders it, “he stood half erect.” The Codex Chisianus, ἐπὶ τοῦ ἑνὸς πλευροῦ ἐστάθη  epi tou henos pleurou estathē - “it stood upon one side.” Maurer renders this, “on one of its forefeet it was recumbent, and stood on the other,” and says that this is the figure exhibited on one of the stones found in Babylon, Barnes Notes

Three Ribs in its mouth. the Greek, three ribs. This would be sufficiently characteristic of a bear, and the attitude of the animal here seems to be that it had killed some other animal, and had, in devouring it, torn out three ribs from its side, and now held them in its mouth. It was slowly rising from a recumbent posture, with these ribs in its mouth, and about to receive a command to go forth and devour much flesh. The number three, in this place, Lengerke supposes to be a round number, without any special significance; others suppose that it denotes the number of nations or kingdoms which the people here represented by the bear had overcome. Barnes

Dan 7:6  After this I saw, and lo, another, like a leopard, which had four wings of a bird on its back. The beast also had four heads; and rulership was given to it.

The animal itself: “a leopard.” The word used here - נמר  nemar - or in Hebrew נמר  nâmêr - denotes a panther or leopard, so called from his spots. This is a well-known beast of prey, distinguished for blood-thirstiness and cruelty, and these characteristics are especially applicable to the female
It had four wings so it  was very swift. One of the Characteristics of the Greek Empire and Alexander’s Campaigns wa the speed at which he moved and attacked as far as Afganistan and Pakistan today. He died of a fever at the age of 32
The beast also had four heads; and rulership was given to it.
His Empire was divided among his four generals after his death.

Dan 7:7  After this I looked in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, frightening and terrifying, and very strong. And it had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the rest with its feet. And it was different from all the beasts before it; and it had ten horns.
Dan 7:8  I was thinking about the horns, and behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom three of the first horns were uprooted. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.
Barnes Notes:images,
The succession, or the fact that he saw one after the other, indicates a sucession in the kingdoms. They were not to be at the same time upon the earth, but one was to arise after another in the order here indicated, though they were in some respects to occupy the same territory. The singular character of the beast that now appears; the number of the horns; the springing up of a new horn; the might and terror of the beast, and the long duration of its dominion upon the earth, attracted and fixed the attention of Daniel, led him into a more minute description of the appearance of the animal, and induced him particularly to ask an explanation of the angel of the meaning of this part of the vision, Dan_7:19.

Remember the Roman Empire represented by the legs of Iron in the Daniel 2 Vision is  to be terrifying and awful in its destructive capacity.
Note : It killed the Messiah on a cruel cross.
It destroyed Jerusalem and the temple.
It murdered Thousands of Jews and deported the rest.
Read Josephus.
It had ten horns. These correspond to the Ten toes of the Dan 2 Vision.
Ten Kings will arise. This speaks of Order and process over time. The Bible is exact in every detail.
Dan 7:8  I was thinking about the horns, and behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom three of the first horns were uprooted. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things. [Boastful things]
It takes out Three horns.
note
Dan 7:19  Then I wanted to know the truth of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, very frightening, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of bronze; who devoured, broke in pieces, and stamped the rest with his feet;
Dan 7:20  and of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth speaking very great things, whose appearance was greater than his fellows.
Dan 7:21  I watched, and that horn made war with the saints and overcame them
Dan 7:22  until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the Most High. And the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
Dan 7:23  And he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be different from all kingdoms and shall devour the whole earth, and shall trample it and crush it.
Dan 7:24  And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise. And another shall arise after them. And he shall be different from the first, and he shall humble three kings.
Dan 7:25  And he shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and plot to change times and laws. And they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and one-half time.
Dan 7:26  But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his rulership, to cut off and to destroy until the end.
Dan 7:27  And the kingdom and rulership, and the greatness of the kingdom under all the heavens, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. And all kingdoms shall serve and obey Him.
Dan 7:28  Here is the end of the matter.

The Little Horn : When does it Rise to Power?

Dan 7:15  I Daniel was distressed in my spirit in its body, and the visions of my head troubled me.
Dan 7:16  And I came near one of those who stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the meaning of the things.

I came near unto one of them that stood by - Barnes :That is, to one of the angels who appeared to stand near the throne. Dan_7:10. Compare Dan_8:13; Zec_4:4-5; Rev_7:13. It was natural for Daniel to suppose that the angels who were seen encircling the throne would be able to give him information on the subject, and the answers which Daniel received show that he was not mistaken in his expectation. God has often employed angels to communicate important truths to men, or has made them the medium of communicating his will. Compare Rev_1:1; Act_7:53; Heb_2:2.
So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things - He explained the meaning of the symbols, so that Daniel understood them. It would seem probable that Daniel has not recorded all that the angel communicated respecting the vision, but he has preserved so much that we may understand its general signification.

The Ancient of Days will sit upon His Throne and Judgment will be Given.

“The saints will have the Kingdom for ever and ever.” This is the Judgment. Daniel 7:22
Ancient of days came The title applied to the Father in Dan_7:13 is here applied to the Son; who is called “the everlasting Father” (Isa_9:6). The Father is never said to “come”; it is the Son who comes.

judgment was given to ... saints — Judgment includes authority to rule; “kingdom” in the end of this verse (1Co_6:2; Rev_1:6; Rev_5:10; Rev_20:4). Christ first receives “judgment” and the “kingdom,” then the saints with Him (Dan_7:13, Dan_7:14). JFB

Dan 7:19  Then I wanted to know the truth of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, very frightening, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of bronze; who devoured, broke in pieces, and stamped the rest with his feet;

Israel won’t cry to God in desperation until their strength will be gone.

Deu 32:36  The LORD will judge his people and have compassion on his servants when he sees that their strength is gone and that no one is left, neither slaves nor free people.
Deu 32:37  Then he will ask, "Where are their gods? Where is the rock they took refuge in?

Joel 3:16  The LORD will roar from Zion, and his voice will thunder from Jerusalem. The sky and the earth will shake. The LORD will be a refuge for his people. He will be a stronghold for the people of Israel.
Joel 3:17  "You will know that I am the LORD your God. I live on my holy mountain, Zion. Jerusalem will be holy. Foreigners will never invade it again.

The times of the gentiles will come to an end forever.
Israel is one of the Most Powerful nations Militarily but they must not trust the arm of the flesh. The power of the Holy people will be broken.

Dan 12:7  I heard the man dressed in linen clothes who was above the river. He raised his right hand and left hand to heaven and swore an oath by the one who lives forever. He said, "It will be for a time, times, and half of a time. When the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, then all these things will be finished."

His feet shall stand upon the Mount of Olives. God will step in to Help and Deliver.
Dan 7:25  He will speak against the Most High God, oppress the holy people of the Most High, and plan to change the appointed times and laws. The holy people will be handed over to him for a time, times, and half of a time. [3 and a half years]

The le Horn shall oppress the Holy People for Three and a Half years until finally their strength is gone. Then they will cry out to God in desperation and God will come and deliver them.
